"After I fell and broke my hip I was scared that I would never get to live in my new apartment …..everyone thought I should have moved to an assisted living residence but I wanted to still be on my own where people didn’t tell me when I had to go to dinner or socialize with other old people. I never wanted to be a burden to my children and would lay in bed at night wondering if I could ever get back to my apartment and be independent again. My daughter must have worried as well as she called Creative Housing to ask if there was anyway they could look at my apartment to see if I could get around independently with my wheelchair and walker that I was now dependent on. The nicest men came and met us at my apartment along with the physical therapist that was working with me and had me show them my routine. They removed some doors to make it wider for my wheelchair and placed grab bars all around the bathroom because I told them my fear of falling again. I really was most concerned about bathing as I wanted my privacy but didn’t know how I could do it alone. They placed grab bars in my shower and put a hose on the shower head and showed me how I could sit in the shower chair and be safe. I can’t tell you how much they did for me but to say I am so happy living alone again without having to be dependent on my children and still feel safe from falling. I wish my friends could have the same help."
